Abstract

This study is aimed at providing a comparative analysis of the mutual fund investments and direct stock market investments within Indian financial environment. This research paper assesses the risk-return profile, the cost structure, accessibility, and regulatory frameworks of both investment options through research study, market trends and performance indicators.

The research determines the major factors that determine the decision making process of

investors such as liquidity needs, risk tolerance and investment horizon. Findings have shown that direct equity investment has a higher potential of providing a higher return to the knowledgeable investor with a higher risk tolerance; however, the mutual funds can offer a diversification benefit and professional management which suits the retail investor who wants moderate risk exposure. The results help in understanding how the Indian investors can maximize their portfolio between these two basic investment vehicles.
